Welding Course Outline

The York Industrial Trades Academy offers welding courses in York Region located in Toronto and provides training to students who wish to become skilled, successful welders or to enhance the skills of an experienced welder.

Admission Requirements

What you need before you can be accepted to YITA’S Welding Program

Students are 18 years of age or older
Pass a qualifying test that has been approved by the Superintendent
Meet other academic qualifications or minimum age requirements
Established as a condition of the Superintendent’s approval of the program
An Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent

Advanced Standing

To obtain advanced standing in our welding courses you will be required to:

Attend an interview with the Academy to determine if prior knowledge or skills exist
Testing may be conducted to determine student knowledge
Documentation of prior knowledge or skills to be collected from student if necessary

Students that are granted Advanced Standing must complete the program with the same knowledge and skills as if taking the entire program.

Graduates of this program will know how to:

  • Identify potential hazards, follow safe workplace practices and contribute to a safe workplace
  • Fabricate and assemble projects
  • Read and work with a variety of shop drawings
  • Perform oxyacetylene welding and cutting operations
  • Contributing to a positive work environment
  • Perform Shielded Metal Arc Welding
  • Perform Gas Tungsten Arc Welding
  • Perform Gas Metal Arc Welding
  • Fabricate and assemble various metal components
  • Effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors and clients

Applied Blueprint Reading 60hrs
Welding Theory I 30hrs
Materials and Process Quality I 27hrs

Shield Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) I 69hrs
Gas Shield Semi-Auto Practical I 54hrs
Thermal Cutting 27hrs

Courses are also available to improve your English. These courses will provide job-specific, advanced-level English training to adult newcomers with a focus on the specific language needed to be a welder in Canada.
